    Family Description - Fls perfect, much reduced, with superior or naked ovary, the sep vestigial or wanting; pet none; stamens in 1–several cycles; ovary mostly bicarpellate and bilocular, with axile placentation and distinct or basally connate styles; fr a septicidal capsule with numerous tiny seeds; embryo straight, with 2 cotyledons; endosperm none; submerged or partly floating aquatics of fast rivers with a stony bed, producing aerial fls and frs at times of low water; plants vegetatively highly modified, commonly ± thalloid. 40/200+.
