    Family Description - Dioecious or polygamo-dioecious; cal deeply lobed, persistent and often accrescent in fr; cor sympetalous; stamens 2–4 times as many as the cor-lobes, hypogynous or attached to the base of the cor-tube in staminate fls, in the pistillate fls none or fewer and usually sterile; ovary plurilocular, with mostly 3–8 carpels and as many or twice as many chambers; style deeply cleft, or the styles distinct; ovules apical-axile, 1 per chamber; fr a berry; seeds with thin testa and abundant, hard endosperm; cotyledons flat; trees or shrubs with alternate, entire, exstipulate lvs. 5/450.
