Description - Trees up to 20 m tall; latex very bitter. Leafy twigs (5-)7-12 mm thick, greyish to brownish, yellowish puberulous, periderm irregularly wrinkled, peeling off in very small flakes. Leaves lanceolate to oblong, often broadest near the upper end, 20-60 cm long, 7-18 cm broad, coriaceous to subcoriaceous, acuminate, acute to obtuse to emarginate to cordate at the base, glabrous or nearly so; the costa and (the proximal parts of) the secondary veins prominent, otherwise the venation nearly plane above, veins prominent beneath, secondary veins, (21-)26-35 pairs, mostly distinctly loop-connected, petioles 5-20 mm long; stipules (10-)20-35 mm long, coriaceous, puberulous at the base, curved, mostly subpersistent. Staminate inflorescences up to 8 together, 2-5 mm in diameter, including the indistinct, bracteate peduncle 5-12 mm high; receptacle more or less cup-shaped; involucre with 15-25 deltoid to suborbiculate to ovate to oblong to lanceolate, obtuse, sparsely puberulous bracts in 6-10 series; flowers 10 or more, basally connate; perianth 2-5 mm high, 4-6-lobed to 4-6-fid, glabrous; stamens 1-2, filaments 3-6 mm long, anthers 0.5-0.9 mm long, 0.2-0.3 mm broad, connectives narrow. Pistillate inflorescences solitary or occasionally accompanied by staminate ones, 7-12 mm in diameter, sessile or subsessile; involucre with ca 20-30 reniform to deltoid to ovate to lanceolate, acute, acuminate, or obtuse, sparsely puberulous bracts in (4-)6-8 series; flowers ca 20-30; tepals free, subulate to spine-like, 5-7 mm long, acute, puberulous; style 1-3.5 mm long, stigmas vittiform, 2-4.5 mm long; pseudobracts similar to the tepals, 2-7 mm long. Infructescences 5-7 cm in diameter; tepals and pseudobracts up to 2.5 cm long, up to 4 mm thick, spine-like, straight or curved; fruit ellipsoid, 9-12 × 7-9 mm. Flowering from June to February.

Discussion
This species seems to be most closely related to N. naga. The twigs often resemble those of N. stipularis. Some differences between this species and N. amara are mentioned under the latter.

Distribution
(Fig 42). Upper Amazon Basin, in Brazil and Peru; in forests of the terra firma.
