Description - Trees up to 15 m tall; latex white to yellow. Leafy twigs 2-6(-10) mm thick, brownish, sometimes greyish, whitish or yellow appressed-puberulous to pubescent to brown velutinous; lenticels often conspicuous; periderm sometimes more or less wrinkled. Leaves lanceolate (to oblong), 13-35(-53) cm long, 3.5-11 (-14.5) cm broad, coriaceous to subcoriaceous, acuminate, acute or subobtuse at the base, glabrous or sparsely to somewhat rough beneath; margin mostly revolute; costa and the proximal part of the secondary veins prominent, otherwise plane to impressed above, veins more or less prominent beneath, secondary veins, 15-24 pairs, straight and joined by a rather well-defined, slightly arched, submarginal vein; petioles 8-20 mm long, 2-4 mm broad; stipules 8-20 mm long, yellow subsericeous. Staminate inflorescences 8-15 mm in diameter; peduncle 4-10 mm long, puberulous; involucre with 9-13 reniform to deltoid to ovate to subovate, obtuse, sparsely pubescent to puberulous bracts in 4-5 series; perianth 2-2.7 mm high, tepals 3-7, free; stamens 2-4, filaments 0.5-2 mm long, anthers 0.5-1.1 mm long, 0.4 -0.7 mm broad, sometimes apiculate. Pistillate inflorescences 5-10 mm in diameter, sessile to pedunculate; peduncle up to 6 mm long; involucre with 15-20 reniform to deltoid to ovate to subovate, obtuse to acute, appressed-pubescent to puberulous bracts in 4-6 series; flowers 4-13; perianth 1.3-3.5 mm high, 5-8-fid to 5-8-parted, puberulous; style 2-2.5 mm long, stigmas vittiform to filiform, 6-12 mm long; pseudobracts mainly peripheral, 1-3.5 mm long, subulate to spine-like, acute, puberulous. Infructescences convexly discoid to subglobose, 1.5-5 cm in diameter; fruiting perianth 1.5- ca 10 mm high, broadened at the base, free parts 1-4 mm long, if long straight or, if short, incurved; pseudobracts 1-7 mm long, more or less spinelike to subulate, broadened at the base; fruit subglobose, 7-30 mm long. Flowering from September to February.

Discussion
The species varies considerably in the indument of the twigs, the size of the leaves, and the characters of the pistillate inflorescences and infructescences. Several specimens from the western part of the area have brown subvelutinous twigs, thus approaching N. macrophylla. The leaves of these specimens are sparsely hairy or somewhat rough beneath. Most specimens from the eastern part of the area have yellowish appressed-pubescent twigs and almost glabrous leaves. N. caloneura differs distinctly from N. macrophylla in the pistillate inflorescences and the venation of the leaves.
The number of flowers appears to be positively correlated with the length of the tepals and pseudobracts in fruit and the length of the stigmas. In few-flowered specimens the short tepals are incurved and often contracted about the middle in fruit. -
