Description - Trees up to 25 m tall. Leafy twigs 2-7 mm thick, covered with yellow to brownish appressed to patent, firm hairs often intermixed with much shorter patent hairs, scars of the stipules mostly prominent. Leaves oblong to lanceolate, sometimes broadest near the lower or near the upper end, slightly inequilateral, 11-33 cm long, 4.5-13.0 cm broad, coriaceous to subcoriaceous, acuminate, acute to obtuse (to emarginate) at the base, almost glabrous to puberulous or hirtellous, glabrescent above, appressed-pubescent to hirtellous, often rugose beneath; costa prominent, the other veins nearly plane to somewhat impressed above, prominent beneath, 16-21 (-25) pairs of secondary veins, most tertiary veins parallel; petioles 4-13 mm long; stipules 6-15 mm long, yellow subsericeous. Staminate inflorescences ca 15 mm in diameter; receptacle concave; involucre with 25-35 reniform to deltoid to suborbiculate to ovate to lanceolate, obtuse(to mucronate), yellow sericeous bracts in 6-8 series; filaments o.2-0.4 mm long, anthers ca 2 mm long, 0.4-0.5 mm broad, apiculate, with hairs at the tip; interstaminal bracts 3-8 mm long, lanceolate to linear, hairy outside. Pistillate inflorescences 2.5-3.0 mm in diameter; involucre with 15-28 reniform to deltoid to ovate, obtuse to acute, yellow sericeous bracts in 3-4 series; perianth ca 3 mm high, brownish velutinous, stigmas 7-8 mm long. Fruiting perianth subglobose, at least 15 mm high, brown velutinous. Flowering from May to November.

  • Discussion

According to Miquel (1853) Trecul’s treatment was published in 1848, not in 1847, which would give MiquePs name priority. This could not be confirmed.

In some specimens only very few short patent hairs are found among the much longer ones. P. macrophylla is the only species of Pseudolmedia in which the receptacles of the staminate inflorescences are distinctly concave. P. macrophylla is distinguishable from P. laevis by the dimensions of the twigs, the prominent scars of the stipules, and/or the dense indument of the fruiting perianth and the involucral bracts.
