Description - Erect or climbing herbs or shrubs; stems usually glabrous; flowers solitary or more often fascicled, usually large and conspicuous, yellow, orange, red or purple, borne in heads, spikes or racemes, the flower clusters subtended by small or large, rarely partly connate bracts, these sometimes colored; calyx 5-lobed; corolla tube subcylindric, the limb 5-lobed, lobes equal; stamens 2, usually exserted; anthers normally bithecous, longitudinally ciliate, mucronulate at base; staminodes 2; capsule oblong, 6-8-seeded; seeds orbicular.
