Description - Shrubs or herbs; leaves opposite; entire; flowers axillary or borne in terminal bracted spikes; calyx deeply 4-parted, 2 of the segments larger than the others; corolla usually yellow or blue, the tube about as long as the spreading limb or longer, the limb with 5 rounded lobes; stamens 4, didynamous, borne on the base of the corolla tube; style elongated; stigma obtuse, ovules 2 in each cavity; capsules ovoid to oblong; seeds flattenedj ovate to suborbicular.
