Description - The difficulty with the Steele collection is that there are two sheets at US, each with the same date, "3 & 21 Aug 1897." Each sheet clearly represents a single plant so that it is likely that one sheet was gathered on 3 Aug and the other on 21 Aug. We have designated the sheet that best fits the protologue as the lectotype and consider the second US sheet (no. 364023) a syntype. The NY sheet appears to be a duplicate of the lectotype. Greene also cited a N. L. Britton collection gathered at "Garretson" [now Garretson Street] on Staten Island in Richmond Co., New York, on 25 Aug 1889, considering it to be "nearly the same." This syntype is at NY and at US.
