    Species Description - Plants ca. 2 mm wide, yellowish to reddish brown, loosely creeping, usually not forming mats, irregularly 1-2-pinnate. Leaf lobes convex, widely ovate to ovate-elliptical, apex rounded, plane or somewhat recurved, margins entire, dorsal base auriculate. Cells in upper part of leaf isodiametrical, 20-30 µm, walls slightly sinuose. trigones well-developed, often bulging, intermediate thickenings frequently present; ocelli lacking. Lobules close to stem, erect, helmet-shaped, with a long, flat basal appendage longer than sac, appendage attached to lobe along its entire length. Stylus erect, lanceolate. Underleaves bifid to 1/5-1/4 of length, contiguous, 4-5 times stem width, broad-orbicular, gibbous, margins ± entire, plane, bases rounded to auriculate. Rhizoids from middle of underleaf. Paroicous. Gynoecia on long or short branches, margins of bracts and bracteoles entire or somewhat toothed. Perianths narrowly oblong, 4-keeled, surface smooth.

    This species was recorded from central French Guiana as F. arecae (Sprengel) Gottsche by Onraedt and Cremers (1980).
