Species Description - Plants 1.5-2 mm wide, to 10 cm long, dark reddish brown to purple, ascending from substrate, densely and irregularly branched, forming thick mats. Leaf lobes convex, ovate-oblong, apex apiculate, recurved, margins entire, dorsal base auriculate. Cells in upper part of leaf elongate, 10-20 x 5-15 µm, walls sinuose, trigones and intermediate thickenings well-developed; ocelli lacking. Lobules close to stem, erect, cylindrical, 2-3 times longer than wide, occasionally laminate, base very narrowly attached to lobe (by only a few cells). Stylus minute, erect, filiform. Underleaves bifid to 1/4-1/3 of length, imbricate, 4-8 times stem width, ovate-elliptical, margins entire, usually recurved, bases cuneate to auriculate. Dioicous. Gynoecia on long shoots, margins of bracts and bracteoles entire. Perianths with¬out keels, terete, smooth.
