    Description - Plants small to large, often with erect, leafy shoots arising from a creeping rhizome-like stem, irregularly branched to regularly pinnate or dichotomous. Branches Frullania-type and lateral-intercalary. Leaves alternate to subopposite, variable in shape, normally asymmetrical with ventral margin longer than dorsal margin, the latter reflexed and decurrent, apex undivided or 2-3-lobed. ventral margins usually toothed. Cells with or without trigones, cuticle smooth or rough; oil bodies usually finely granular. Underleaves absent or very small. Dioicous. Rest as in the family.
