Genus Description - Plants slender to relatively robust, in yellowish green to brownish, often pendent wefts; primary stems short, secondary stems initially erect but soon becoming pendent, irregularly to regularly pinnatley branched, not complanate- foliate. Secondary stem and branch leaves usually differentiated, the stem leaves haripointed; branch leaves conspicuously 5-ranked when moist, less so when dry, erect to erect-spreading, oblong- lanceolate to oblong- ovate, usually abruplty short- acuminate to hairpointed, concave, short- decurrent; margins subentire to serrulate above, entire below, often strongly incurved at base of acumen, plan below; costa single, ending about 1/2-3/4 the lenght of the leaf; cells linear- flexuouse, smooth, firm-to thick - walled, porose; alar cells well differentiated in conspicuous, often colored areas, oblong to short- rectangular, often irregularly thickened to collenchymatous and porose. Asexual propagula apprently lacking. Dioicous. Setae very short to short, smooth; capsules immersed or exserted, erect and symmetric, short - cylindric; peristome apparently double but endostome greatly reduced, exostome teeth on the front surface appearing broadly furrowed, smooth, with a well developed prostome; endostome rudimentary, Calyptrae cucullate, densely hairy, the hairs long, flexuose, mostly 2-3 seriate. Orthostichopsis is characterized by a Meteoriaceae- like habit but the seriately arranged leaves, well developed alar cells, and numerous single costa and relatively large cluster of alar cells with thickened walls.
