Species Description - Plants small to medium-sized, in small tufts to extensive cushions; stems simple to sparsely branched. Leaves erect to variously contorted when dry, linear to lanceolate usually with an expanded base; margins mostly thickened but lacking elongate hyaline cells; costa subpercurrent to short-excurrent; cells mostly isodiametric, sometimes oblate, smooth or papillose; teniolae often differentiated near shoulders, sometimes almost to leaf apex; canellinae well differentiated. Asexual reproduction common, often with highly modified gemmiferous leaves. Setae elongate; capsules cylindric; peristome absent. Calyptrae enclosing capsule, clasping operculum by its rostrum and twisted around seta, persistent, plicate.
