Species Description - Perennial; culms erect, simple, or branching from the lower nodes, 50 cm. tall, glabrous; sheaths glabrous, longer than the internodes, the uppermost bladeless; blades 2-10 cm. long, 1-2 mm. wide, short-pubescent on the lower surface, the upper surface glabrous or sparsely pubescent; ligule a dense line of very short hairs; raceme 7-12 cm. long, the rachis very slender, flexuous; spikelets 4.5 mm. long, some- what spreading; first glume 2.5 mm. long, about 0.5 mm. wide, 3- nerved, the tip rounded, the margins appressed-hispid with dark red hairs from the base to the middle, the upper part of the glume glabrous; second glume 4.5 mm. long, acuminate, 5-nerved, the marginal nerves prominent, approximate, the margins hispid to just above the middle, the internerves hispid along the midnerve with a short tuft of hairs near the summit; sterile lemma 4 mm. long, abruptly acute, the margins hispid from the base for two-thirds the length of the lemma, the hairs progressively longer above; fruit 3 mm. long, acute, glabrous, dull, straw-colored.
