Species Description - Plants perennial, caespitose, with culms in tufts mostly 4-10 cm in diameter. Culms 20-35 (-50) cm tall, stiffly erect. Leaves bluish-green, more or less glaucous, glabrous except for long and short hairs in the ligular area and a few long pustulate-based hairs on the basal margins of the blades. Ligule a ring of hairs 1-1.5 mm long. Blades 1-1.5 (-2.5) mm broad, 5-15 (-25) cm long, stiffly erect or stiffly curving, tapering to a fine tip, involute on drying. Inflorescence well exerted, usually 5-10 cm long and with 9-15 (-25) rather widely spaced spicate infloreseence branches. Rachis of infloreseence branch scabrous 4-5.5 mm long, bearing usually 2-6 spikelets on the basal one-fourth to one-third. Spikelets 5-6.5 mm long. Glumes and lemma green, often with a purplish or brownish cast. First glume slightly shorter than the second, both usually shorter than the lemma. Anthers dark purple. Rudiment well-developed, usually about as long as the lemma, awned but the awns only slightly or not at all exerted.

Discussion
Bouteloua warnockii was observed to be growing in close association with B. curtipewndula var. caespitosa at three localities and this close association probably is consistent throughout its range. Cytological data indicate that the two taxa have hybridized rather freely. Although diploid (2n = 20) plants of B. warnockii are assumeed to exist, no counts of the exact diploid number have been recorded. The cytological record of B. warnockii is as follows:
2n = 21 NEW MEXICO. Dona Alla Co.: Rope Springs, Gould 9992a.
2n = 22 TEXAS. Culberson Co.: Kent, Gould 4d Kapadia 9533b.
2n = 23 NEW MEXICO. Dona Ana Co.: Rope Springs, Gould 9992c.
2n = 25 NEW MEXICO. Dona Ana Co.: Rope Springs, Gould 9992b.
2n = 25 TEXAS. Culberson Co.: Kent, Gould & Kapadia 9533.
2n = 28 TEXAS. Culberson Co.: Kent, Gould & Kapadia 9533a.
2n = 38 TEXAS. Culberson Co.: "El Capitan," Gould 4 Kapadia 9536b.
2n = 40 TEXAS. Culberson Co.: "El Capitani," Gotld 4' Kapadia 9536a.
