    Species Description - Basal lvs evergreen, elongate-spatulate, becoming 3 dm; scape elongating to 1 m, covered with short bract-like lvs at base, these becoming remote and scale-like above; raceme ovoid, 3–10 cm, ca 3 cm thick; fls fragrant, 1 cm wide; seeds linear, 5 mm; 2n=14. Swamps and bogs; s. N.Y. (formerly) and N.J. to se. Va. on the coastal plain; Blue Ridge Mts. of Va., N.C., and Ga. Apr., May.
