  • Discussion

Type. In forest, La Victoria on the Amazon, Dept. Loreto, Peru, Aug-Sep 1929, Llewelyn Williams 2983.

This species is sometimes confused with P. berteriana DC., but the two taxa are easily distinguished in fruit by the transverse rugulose portions of the fruit excavate between the dorsal ribs of P. microbotrys but smooth in P. berteriana, and, moreover, by several other differences, namely, the stipules of P. microbotrys are conspicuously elongated with caudate lobes, while in P. berteriana they are very short, and acute to obtuse; in P. berteriana the flowers and fruits are subtended by three bracts, whereas in P. microbotrys these are subtended by only one bract. Finally, in P. berteriana the fruit is crowned by a persistent calyx, this being absent in the fruiting stage of P. microbotrys.

Although Standley stated (Field Mus. Publ. Bot. 8: 204. 1930) that the species is not closely related to any other, it would appear that it belongs to the group of Psychotria deflexa and allies with dichotomously branched lateral axes and with fruits rugulose and subtended by a short bract.
