    Acrocomia lasiospatha is rather widespread in northern South America. The Acrocomia populations from Trinidad also belong to this species. Whether the other West Indian Acrocomia populations (with partial exception for Cuba) are conspecific as well is questionable; often they are referred to A. aculeata or sometimes even to as many species as there are West Indian islands without an indication of reliable diagnostic characters. In the present author’s opinion it seems likely that all will prove to be conspecific and that A. aculeata will become the correct name for them all including A. lasiospatha. Actually A. lasiospatha was not collected in the Guayana Highland. However, since it is locally frequent throughout the Guianas and it is found in the Andes to about 1200 m elevation, it can be expected to occur there. Possibly it escaped from collecting by its unwieldy size and armature.
