Discussion
Type. Woronow & Juzepczuk 5885, Colombia, Caqueta, Sucre (LE).
Geonoma euspatha is mainly known from the Guayana Highland, the species is not found in the Andes. Krukoff 10982 (F) from Bolivia, Dept, la Paz, Prov. Larecaja, Tuiri, is the only specimen seen from beyond this area. The original description of G. euspatha is somewhat misleading as far as the bracts of the inflorescence are concerned. Examination of the type collection shows that the inflorescence was cut off above the insertion of the bracts. These unattached, tubular bracts have been shifted and are out of the original position in the mounted specimen. Statements in the first description refer to this artificial position. In this species plants are much influenced by the altitude at which they grow. Steyermark 60789, the type collection of G. karuaiana, has the habit of plants growing in the upper part of its altitudinal range but is nevertheless conspecific with G. euspatha.
