Discussion
Gynestum deversum Poiteau, Mém. Mus. Hist. Nat. Paris 9: 390, t 18. 1822.
Type. Poiteau sn, French Guiana (P).
Specimens from the Guianas usually originate from low elevations—below 500 m—but the species which is extremely widespread and occurs from Guatemala to Bolivia and Peru southward and the Amazon basin and French Guiana eastward sometimes reaches elevations up to about 600 m. Due to its large area and some intraspecific variability several synonyms exist of which Geonoma paniculigera is most frequently found in current literature.
