  • Discussion

Adiantum serrulatum L., Sp. PI. 2: 1095. 1753. Type. Rio d’Oro, Jamaica, Sloane (BM? not seen).

Adiantum monosoratum Willd., Sp. PI. ed. 4, 5: 445. 1810. Type. Caracas, Bredemeyer (B-Hb. Willd. no. 20087 not seen Tryon photo US).

Adiantum umbrosum Willd., Sp. PI. ed. 4, 5: 447. 1810. Type. Caracas, Bredemeyer (B-Hb. Willd. no. 20090 not seen Tryon photo US).

Adiantum apiculatum Schrad., Gott. Gel. Anz. 1824: 872. 1824. Type. Brazil, Prince Maxmillian von Neowidens (BR not seen). Synonymized by C. Christensen (Ind. Fil. 23. 1905).

Adiantum kunzeanum Presl, Tent. Pterid. 157. 1836. Based on A. pulverulentum sensu Kunze non L., which is based on A. monosoratum Willd.

Adiantum claussenii Fee, Gen. Fil. 115. 1852. Type. New Fribourg, Brazil, Claussen (P not seen photo 2618 US).

Adiantum pulverulentum var camptocarpon Fée, Gen. Fil. 114. 1852. Type. “Habitat in America meridionali” (Hb. Mougeot not seen).

Adiantum tetraphyllum var y obtusum Fourn. Mex. PI. 129. 1872. Lectotype. Based on A. polyphyllum Willd. the oldest synonym cited by Fournier. Adiantum brasiliense Raddi (Raddi’s renaming of A. pubescens sensu Raddi) is a related species. The Linden specimen cited by Fournier is A. pulverulentum L., and the Bourgeau specimen I have not seen, but neither need be considered because Fournier includes no description, and his name must therefore be based on one of the other published names.

Adiantum pulverulentum var caudatum Jenm., Bull. Bot. Dep. Jamaica 33: 7. 1892. Based on A. serrulatum L. and on Sloane’s Voy. Jam. t. 35, f. 2 [not f. 6 as Jenman has it].

Adiantum pulverulentum var biserratum Hieron., Bot. Jahrb. 34: 489. 1904, as “biserrata.” Syntypes. Colombia, Lehmann 5027 (B not seen); Mount Tolima, Colombia, Mar. 1882, Schmidtchen (B not seen); Near Tacares, Costa Rica, Nov. 1854, Hoffman (B not seen).

Adiantum pulverulentum var crenatoserratum Hieron., Hedwigia 48: 232. 1909, as “crenato-serrata.” Based on A. monosoratum Willd.

Type. There is no specimen in the Linnaean herbarium, and J. E. Dandy (in litt. 6 Feb 1969) notes that Linnaeus “certainly did not see any from Plumier or any in the Sloane Herbarium . . . A. pulverulentum is therefore . . . based on illustrations.” Logically, the type must be t. 47 from Plumier’s “Description des Plantes de l’Amerique” (1693), because the other illustrations cited by Linnaeus are mere copies of all or a portion of Plumier’s t. 47. The Swartz specimen in the Willdenow Herbarium (no. 20089) photographed by Tryon is not a type.
