Description - Tree with glabrous branchlets; stipules caducous, linear, ca 1.5 mm long; petioles 13-22 mm long, canaliculate, stipellate, strigulose in the depression on the upper surface but otherwise glabrous; rachis 32-45(-55) mm long, canaliculate-marginate, pubescent as the petiole, stipellate at each pair of leaflets; leaflets 3- or 4-(-5-) jugate, the petiolules 0.8-1.5 mm long, glabrous above, puberulous beneath, the blades oval to elliptic, those of the lowermost pair of leaflets smaller, 18-30 mm long and 11-16 mm wide, the other blades 30-45 mm long and 15-22 mm wide, the bases of all the leaflets unequal, the upper side rounded and the lower acute, the apex obtuse, often rounded-obtuse, sometimes slightly retuse, glabrous on the upper surface, flexuose-pilosulose beneath, sometimes partly glabrescent; inflorescences 4-9 cm long, the axis minutely strigulose, the bracts triangular, deciduous, ca 1.5 mm long and 1 mm wide, the bracteoles caducous, arising about midway on the pedicel, lanceolate, ca 1 mm long and 0.5 mm wide, minutely strigulose externally, glabrous within; pedicels 10-15 mm long, minutely strigulose; buds globose to depressed-globose, ca 6 mm diameter, minutely strigulose; calyx segments densely strigulose externally, strigose-sericeous on the inner surface; petal claw 2-3 mm long, the blade villose-sericeous externally, glabrous within, oblate, 9.5-15 mm long, 12.5-23 mm wide; larger stamens 4, glabrous, the anthers oblong, ca 3.5 mm long and 1 mm wide, the pollen mostly elliptic, 23.5-26 µ long, 21-23.5 µ diameter, some grains globose, 23.5 µ diameter, the smaller stamens glabrous, the filaments ca 4.5 mm long, the anthers oblong, ca 1 mm long, the pollen mostly globose, 23.5-26 diameter; gynoecium glabrous, the stigma punctiform, the style 0.7 mm long, the ovary elliptic, ca 4.5 mm long and 1.5 mm wide, the gynophore ca 3 mm long; fruit not seen.

  • Discussion

Among the species of this general relationship with glabrous gynoecia, there is only one other with the calyx segments densely pubescent on the inner surfaces-S. pickelii. The latter occurs in Pernambuco, Brazil, and it differs in the size and relative proportions of the leaflets, and in the length of the leaf-rachis. Both are related to S. curranii through the character of the pubescent inner surface of the calyx, but S. curranii has a densely pubescent gynoecium.

  • Distribution

(Fig. 15). Known only from Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; at least sometimes in secondary forest.
