Coccocypselum repens H.B.K., Nov. Gen. Sp. 3: 316. 1819, non Sw., 1788. Coccocypselum canescens Willd. ex Cham. & Schlecht., Linnaea 4: 139. 1829.
Tontanea canescens (Willd.) Standley, N. Am. Fl. 32: 146. 1921.
Type. In nemoribus Cuchero and Chinchao, Peru, Ruiz & Pavon.
Great variation is displayed in this taxon with respect to leaf shape, base and apex of leaf-blade, length of petiole and peduncle, but the shape of the calyx-lobes remains constant. The corolla in 95%of the specimens examined is blue-purple to violet to lilac mixed with some white. In one instance, at least, the flowers have been recorded as white (Killip & Smith 18862 from Colombia).
Coccocypselum repens was collected by Humboldt and Bonpland in “Buena Vista, Caracas, and Popayan,” the first and third localities in Colombia, the second in Venezuela. Plants collected in the vicinity of Caracas, Venezuela, and from the type localities in Colombia (Lehmann 518 and 395 from Popayan, Pennell 286 from Icononzo, Fosberg & Grant 21971 from south of Gachala, Dept. Cundinamarca), which conform to the description of C. repens H.B.K., are found to be synonymous with Condalia lanceolata (= Coccocypselum lanceolatum).
In the Guayana the species is represented by the following Venezuelan collections:
VENEZUELA. Bolivar: vicinity of Rondon Camp, Mount Roraima, Steyermark 58936; Sororopan-tepui, Steyermark 60088; savanna on west slope of Uaipan-tepui, Phelps & Hitchcock 331.
