Species Description - Plants small, in dense cushions, yellowish-green to somewhat dark green, often hoary in appearance. Stems mostly 5-15 mm tall, branches few; in cross-section outer 1-2 layers thick-walled, reddish-orange, inner cortex of larger hyaline cells, central strand present. Leaves crowded, when dry appressed to erect, lower leaves spreading to squarrose-recurved, when wet erectspreading, keeled distally, oval-obovate, 0.7-1.1 mm long (excluding awn—(0.3-)0.4-0.8(-1.3) mm), 0.45-0.65 mm wide (Fig. 17), unistratose to rarely bistratose in 1-2 bands, acuminate-acute, slightly sheathing stem at base; margin entire to erose distally, often hyaline, occasionally bistratose distally; costa pronounced abaxially, extending as a long excunent awn, in cross-section adaxial and abaxial epidermal cells sunounding 1-2 layers of stereid cells; median cells isodiametric to oval, (5-)10(-18) µm long, upper cells toward junction with costa and margin elongate-oval to rhomboidal, lower and basal cells short or rarely long rectangular to quadrate, 15-40 µm long, 10-18 µm wide, somewhat thick-walled, often appearing lax. Autoicous. Perigonia lateral and below perichaetia; leaves ovate-oblong, to 0.75 mm long, acute-rounded, costa percunent to ending below apex, antheridia few. Perichaetia terminal; leaves similar in shape to stem leaves but larger, to 1.5 mm long (awn to 1 mm long), to 0.65 mm wide. Setae short, (0.35-)0.40-0.45 mm long; capsules ovoid, 0.90-0.95 mm long; exothecial cells irregularly rectangular, walls somewhat thickened; stomata phaneropore, several on lower 1/4 of capsule; annulus of 2-3 rows of cells, 10-35 µm tall, rusty-orange; peristome rusty-orange, highly perforated, long triangular, 190-220 µm long, tips often broken, spiculate (Figs. 4, 5); operculum short rostrate, 0.50-0.55 mm long. Calyptra mitrate, lobed below, plicate, 1.1-1.3 mm long (Fig. 19). Spores 8-10 µm in diameter (Fig. 7).

Ecology and distribution.
