Pogonatum procerum is a distinct species with consistently paired, rounded marginal cells of lamellae. Menzel (1985) incorrectly referred it, as P. robustum, to the synonymy of P. subflexuosum (Lor.) Broth. According to Hyvonen (1989a), P. procerum must replace the more familiar name, P. robustum Mitt.
