Species Description - Slender plants in flat, glossy, yellowish mats. Stems irregularly branched; branches ± decurved at the tips. Leaves sometimes distinctly secund, 1-1.5 mm long, 0.4-0.6 mm wide near the middle, lanceolate, slenderly acuminate; margins plane, sharply serrate above and serrulate to the base; costa short and double or none; upper cells linear, 47-70 µm long, 5-6 µm wide; alar regions with 1-4 quadrate, rectangular, or rounded cells at the margins. Autoicous. Perichaetial leaves erect, acuminate, sermlate. Setae 10-18 mm long, reddish-brown, sometimes yellowish above; capsules erect, sometimes slightly curved, 1.5-3 mm long, narrowly cylindric, narrow and sometimes wrinkled at the neck, yellowish; operculum conic to obliquely shortrostrate; exostome teeth up to 200 µm long, cilia none. Spores 10-12 µm in diameter, minutely papillose.

H. cylindricarpa (Card.) Iwats., J. Hattori Bot. Lab. 33: 374. 1970.
Isopterygium cylindricarpum Card., Rev. Bryol. 37: 56. 1910.
Ctenidiadelphus cylindricarpus (Card.) Bartr., Bryologist 49: 124. 1946.
Specific characters are provided by long, slender, erect capsules (quite narrow and often wrinkled at the neck) and sharply serrate leaf margins. Bartram (1946) transferred this species to Ctenidiadelphus (a genus of Java and Borneo) because of erect, narrowly cylindric capsules. However, there are many reasons, including phytogeographic ones, for placing the species in Herzogiella. In Ctenidiadelphus the inflorescences are synoicous; the stem and branch leaves are dimorphous; the leaf cells are minutely papillose at the upper angles; the setae are roughened above; the exostome teeth are papillose; the basal membrane of the endostome is very low; and the calyptrae are more or less hairy when young.
