Species Description - Plants relatively robust, in green, yellow, or golden-brown, shiny mats. Branches ± turgid and sometimes cuspidate- tipped, straight, ascending. Leaves erect or erect-spreading, not homomallous, 1.5-2 mm long, concave, oblong-ovate, acute or broadly short-acuminate; margins somewhat reflexed below, entire; upper median cells linear, 12:1 or more; alar cells abmptly inflated in 2 tiers, yellow. Autoicous. Perichaetial leaves entire. Setae 10-18 mm long; capsules strongly inclined, 1-1.2 mm long; annulus very narrow; cilia of endostome fused in pairs. Spores 13-20 µm, faintly roughened. (Sporophytes not seen in Mexican material.)

The seepy habitat, robust stature, erect leaves, and alar cells conspicuously inflated in t wo rows give ample distinction to this species.

Distribution
On wet, shaded rock slope, Oaxaca (Sierra de Juarez, Sharp & McFarland 582b, with Hygrohypnum micans, TENN).—Mexico; widespread on wet acidic rocks in eastern North America.
