    Species Description - Plants small, green or golden-green. Stems irregularly branched; branches short, ascending, straight or slightly curved. Leaves crowded, erect or spreading, homomallous, weakly concave, 0.7-1.6 mm long, narrowly lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, acuminate; upper cells long-rhomboidal to linear-flexuose, 6-12:1; alar cells oblong and enlarged, yellowish. Setae 4-9 mm long; capsules suberect, ± symmetric, short-cylindric; endostome segments perforate and cilia none or mdimentary. Spores 10-17 µm, finely papillose.

    The species is recognized by narrow leaves with apical cells scarcely differentiated and alar cells enlarged but not strongly inflated. (Many of the specimens previously assigned to S. sericifolium Mitt, belong here.)

    On trunks and branches oftrees, rarely on wood, soil, or rock in oak-pine forest; Baja California, Chiapas, Colima, Hidalgo, Michoacan, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, Veracruz; reported from Yucatan and Campeche.—Mexico to northern South America; West Indies; eastern United States.
