The slenderly acuminate, falcate-secund leaves are the special features of this species. The serration of leaf tips is variable. Plants of Mexico generally have subentire leaves, but in the Caribbean area they generally have sermlate leaf tips. Intermediate conditions in both regions reduce the taxonomic value of such serrations.
