Branch leaves loosely erect, very slightly flattened, and ± secund when dry, erect-spreading when moist, about 1.3 mm long, oblong-ovate or oblong-lanceolate, long-acuminate; margins very narrowly reflexed at least when dry, coarsely serrate in the upper half, especially on the acumen; cells linear-flexuose above, shorter, broader, thick-walled, porose, and yellowish at the insertion; alar cells well-marked, hyaline, yellowish, or orange-red. Autoicous. Setae 24-45 mm long, red-brown to red, slender and flexuose; capsules suberect or inclined, curved-cylindric, 1.8-3 mm long; operculum apiculate; exostome teeth brownish; ciha of endostome long and well-developed, usually in 2s and 3s, occasionally single. The stem leaves are somewhat larger than branch leaves; both are coarsely serrate in the upper half. The alar cells are well marked in concave groups of subquadrate, thick-walled, often yellowish cells.
Heterophyllium hastifolium (Card.) Fleisch., listed in Die naturlichen Pflanzenfamilien, is a meaningless combination based on a confusion of specimens of H. affine and Brachythecium hastifolium Card. (Theriot, 1931).
