    Species Description - Stems up to 2.5 cm long, (with leaves) 1-2 mm wide, complanate-foliate to subjulaceous. Leaves 1-2 mm long, 0.4-1 mm wide near the middle, oblong-ovate to nearly lingulate, abmptly acute to obtuse and sometimes apiculate; upper cells 19-33 x 7-9 µm. Setae 6-10 mm long; capsules 0.8-1.8 mm long; exostome teeth up to 500 µm long. Spores 12-24 µm.

    Easily recognized by the dull, complanate, singly costate leaves with short, rhomboidal cells usually having a single papilla over the lumen.

    On bark on bases of trees, stumps, and logs or sometimes on limestone at elevations up to 1500 m; Campeche, Chiapas, Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco, Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo Leon, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosi, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Yucatan.—Mexico; Central and South America; West Indies; Florida and Texas; Africa (Cameroon and Nigeria); reported from Australia (Queensland) by Enroth, 1991a.
