    Species Description - Stem leaves 1.5-3 x 0.5-1.1 mm; median cells 30-55 x 3-5 µm; basal cells 17-35 x 5-11 µm; alar cells 8-18 x 4-13 µm. Branch leaves 0.8-2.4 x 0.3-0.9 mm. Perichaetial leaves up to 3.1 mm long. Setae 11-17 mm long; capsules 2.2-2.8 x 0.6-1 mm ; annulus of 2 layers of inflated cells; cilia of endostome none. Spores 9-20 µm, finely papillose.

    The plants are rigid and shiny when dry. The leaves, more or less plicate, are ovate, rounded to the insertion, and rather broadly tapered to a coarsely toothed apex. The narrow, thick-walled upper cells and numerous squarish alar cells also aid in determination.

    Common in moist, wooded areas on rocks or tree trunks, also on road banks, at 1100-3600 m elev.; Chiapas, Chihuahua, Hidalgo, Mexico, Michoacan, Nuevo Leon, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, Veracruz.—Mexico; Central and South America; West Indies; Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Texas.
