  Genus Description - Plants slender to moderately robust, in green or yellowish to golden-brown tufts or mats, ± shiny when dry or crowded and erect-ascending, irregularly to subpinnately branched; pseudoparaphyllia sometimes at branch bases. Leaves suberect, ovate to cordate, shortly decurrent, gradually to somewhat abmptly narrowed to a long, channeled acumen that is usually wide-spreading to squarrose-recurved; margins mostly erect and mostly entire; costa single, slender, and ± elongate or short and double (or lacking); cells short or elongate, narrowly rhomboidal to linear, smooth, ± differentiated in somewhat excavate alar groups (small, quadrate, incrassate, and yellowish or sometimes lax and inflated). Perichaetial leaves erect or sheathing at the base, lance-subulate, striate.

• Discussion

  The genus shows variability in cell length and nature of the costa. The unifying features of the genus, synthetic though it be, are wide-spreading leaves with channeled acumina.
