This variety and the next are by far the most common Fabronias in Mexico. One might try to separate the taxon into two entities, one with ovate-lanceolate leaves and more or less thin-walled cells (including the types of F. imbricata, F. polycarpa, and F. ravenelii) and the other with somewhat rhombic leaves and firmer-walled cells (F. flavinervis); however, too many intermediates exist e.g., F. tuerckheimii). Criteria justifying the maintenance of this variety distinct from the var. ciliaris include a different, albeit overlapping range, a tendency to have entire leaf margins, and larger spores. The variety is separated from var. wrightii by broader, often entire leaves with shorter acumina.
