Species Description - Plants 2-8 cm high, loosely and irregularly pinnate to rather closely and regularly pinnate or bipinnate. Leaves elliptic to oblong-elhptic or oblong-ovate, acute to obtuse and mucronate; margins plane (or sometimes narrowly reflexed at base), serrulate to crenulate; costae about 0.7-0.8 the leaf length, with crest none or only 1 cell high, smooth or occasionally serrulate, ending in a small spine, often bearing propagula at the base; cells somewhat to conspicuously papillose, oblong to elhptic. Dioicous. Setae 0.6-1.3 mm long; capsules shortly exserted.

The short costae (2/3 or less the leaf length) and basal propagula are the most characteristic features of this species.

Distribution
On trees and shrubs, occasionally on rotten logs, from sea level to 900, rarely 1700 m alt.; Chiapas, Puebla, Veracruz; reported from San Luis Potosi.—Eastern Mexico to northern South America (Guianas); southeastern Brazil; West Indies.
