Genus Description - Annuals or perennials, caespitose, decumbent and rooting at nodes, or less commonly rhizomatous. Inflorescence an open panicle, or in some species with racemose branches; spikelets usually disarticulating as a whole from pedicels. Spikelets 2-flowered, plump, terete, biconvex, or somewhat laterally compressed; lower glume short to nearly as long as spikelet, lower floret staminate or sterile, the palea absent to well-developed and as long as lemma; upper floret with lemma indurate, awnless, usually stramineous, glabrous or uncommonly pubescent, smooth or uncommonly rugose, the margins usually inrolled over margins of palea.
