 Genus Description - Plants of indefinite duration, from decumbent, creeping, and rooting culms, forming large vegetative colonies. Inflorescence a pyramidal panicle of distant, ascending racemes; racemes short, secund, the rachis triquetrous, bearing paired spikelets from two sides. Spikelets falling entire, somewhat laterally compressed, the bracts short- to long-awned from a bifid apex; lower glume shorter than spikelet, 3-7-veined; upper glume shorter than to nearly as long as spikelet, 5—7-veined, with a straight, long, laterally flattened awn; lower floret sterile, the lemma as long as spikelet, 5-9-veined, short-awned, the palea absent; upper floret concealed by lower floret, the lemma narrowly elliptic to lanceolate, indurate, shining, the margins strongly inrolled over palea.
