    Species Description - Plants sparsely branched, yellow-green. Secondary stems 1-1.5(-3) cm high, not or shortly stipitate (the stipe up to 5 mm high). Propagula frequent, 4-10-cellcd, yellow-brown. Stipe leaves 0.8-1 x 0.6 mm, ovate-acuminate, erect. Leaves of secondary stems 1.5-2 x 0.6-1 mm, concave, oblong-lanceolate, short-acuminate, rounded to the insertion; margins plane or erect, serrulate above the base; costa percurrent; apical cells short-rhomboidal, 20-25 x 5-6 µm; median cells linear-sinuolate, 20-40 x 4-5 µm; basal cells rectangular, 20-35 x 8-10 µm, yellow, thick-walled, pitted; alar cells quadrate, 10-12 µm, numerous. Branch leaves 1.2-1.4 x 0.4-0.5 mm , cymbiform-concave, oblong-lanceolate, shortacuminate, rounded to the insertion; margins erect, serrulate above the base; costa percurrent; apical cells rhomboidal, 20-25 x 3-5 µm; median cells linear-sinuolate, 25-32 x 4-5 µm; basal cells rectangular, 15-20 x 8-10 µm, yellow, thickwalled, pitted; alar cells quadrate, 8-10 µm, numerous. Setae 6-10 mm long, smooth; capsules exserted, 2-2.5 mm long, oblong-cylindric. Spores 22-24 µm. (Sporophytes not seen from Mexico.)

    Pireella cymbifolia differs from P. pohlii in its irregular branching and numerous differentiated alar cells. Appressed stipe leaves and cymbiform-concave branch leaves with elongate cells and percurrent costa distinguish this from other members ofthe genus.

    On the bark of trees, also on logs, in moist forests at lower elevations; Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz, Yucatan.—Mexico to northern South America; West Indies; southeastern United States (Georgia, Rorida, and Louisiana).
