    Species Description - Secondary stems 4-10 cm high (the stipe 1.5-3 cm high), with branches 1-2 cm long. Stipe leaves clasping, 3-3.5 x 1 mm, ovate-lanceolate. Upper leaves of secondary stems erect-spreading, 2-3 x 0.5-1 mm, lanceolate and acuminate to oblong and acute, cordate at the insertion; margins plane to erect, serrate to serrulate; costa elongate but often very weak; cells thick-walled and pitted throughout the leaf; apical cells 48-80 x 4-6 µm; basal and alar cells rectangular, 45-65 x 8-10 µm. Branch leaves oblong-acute to lance-acuminate, 2-3.5 x 0.8-1.2 mm long; margins serrate; apical cells 40-55 x 5-6 µm; median cells 55-65 x 5-6 µm, basal and alar cells 40-55 x 8-10 µm. (Sporophytes not seen from Mexico.)

    The plants are stipitate-frondose, with narrow, plicate leaves serrate at their tips. Broad-leaved plants with leaves smooth or weakly plicate agree in all other respects with the more common form with narrow, distinctly plicate leaves.

    On trunks or branches of trees, sometimes on boulders or soil of steep slopes; Chiapas, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, Veracruz.-Mexico to northern South America; West Indies.
