The plants are easily recognized because of their slender, long-pendent habit of growth. As in other members of the family, the capsules are immersed. The inflorescences are autoicous; the perichaetial leaves are considerably differentiated and long-awned; and the calyptrae are small and mitrate. As in Cryphaea and Schoenobryum, the spores germinate after dispersal to produce a filamentous, branched protonema.
