Haplohymenium triste much resembles Anomodon. The plants grow in thin mats. They are slender and irregularly branched, with stem and branch leaves imbricate when dry but wide-spreading when moist and abruptly narrowed from a broad base to a lingulate or lanceolate point that is usually broken off.
