Species Description - Plants slender, yellow- to light-green above, olive-green to brownish below, in dense to loose mats. Stems descending, with erect-upcurved, irregular branches. Leaves sometimes glaucous, erect-appressed, shghtiy secund, never twisted or contorted when dry, distinctly spirally 5-ranked, dense, and spreading w h e n moist, about 1-1.5 mm long, strongly keeled, ovate-lanceolate to ovate and quickly narrowed to a ligulate-lanceolate upper portion, often ending in a broad cusp, the upper portion fragile, often broken, decurrent; margins recurved below, plane above, entire or roughened by large papillae; costa strong below, ending just below the apex; upper cells 7-10 µm wide, irregularly-rounded to quadraterounded, moderately thick-walled, plane to slightly bulging, obscure, with 1 large, conic papilla u p to 8 µm high on both surfaces; basal cells similar to the upper, at the insertion longer than broad, becoming tuberculate-spinose; decurrency cells in part tuberculate-papillose, abruptly small, ± quadrate, and spinose in the upper portion. Sporophytes and inflorescences not seen.

Critical features include slightly secund, erect-appressed leaves that are ± ovate-lanceolate and quickly narrowed to a ligulate-lanceolate upper part, with the upper portion fragile and usually broken off. The leaf cells are similar throughout and strongly unipapillose; those of the decurrencies are inflated, hyaline, and tuberculate.

Distribution
On trunks of Quercus; Oaxaca (Niltepec).—Mexico; Guatemala; southcentral Brazil. (Other members ofthe genus are restricted to southeastern Africa and Madagascar.)
