Genus Description - Rhizomatous or caespitose perennials; fertile culms arising centrally or laterally, if lateral, then usually with bladeless sheaths at base. Leaves basal or cauline, linear or less often lanceolate, usually 3-veined, M-shaped in transverse section. Inflorescences umbellate-corymbose, paniculate, or capitate, the involucral bracts leaf-like; spikes compound, ellipsoid to ovoid or obovoid, the scales spirally imbricate, each subtending a spikelet; spikelets comprising a pair of opposite, keeled scales each subtending a staminate flower comprising a single stamen, rarely a third scale with a staminate flower present above the basal pair and abaxial to the rachilla, the pistillate flower terminal, the stigmas 2. Fruits achene-like, ellipsoid to obovoid, irregularly longitudinally wrinkled, the apex and base usually tapered and pointed.
