    Species Description - Sterile plants 10-30 cm tall, variable in size and color, often aggregated, flowering plants slightly taller, forming a subbulbous rosette. Leaves 8-30 cm long; sheath orbicular, much inflated; blade fleshy-coriaceous, subulate-involute, 0.1-0.5 cm diam., attenuate, sharp, minutely lepidote. Inflorescences 7.5-23 cm long, unbranched or digitately compound from 2-5 polystichously arranged branches, the peduncle erect, 5-15 cm long, the spikelets densely and distichously 3-6-flowered, complanate, lanceolate, 2.5—5 X 0.7- 1 cm, the floral bracts obscurely carinate, ovate, 1.1-1.9 cm long, densely lepidote abaxially, green to red. Flowers appressed, sessile; sepals 1-1.2 cm long, bluntly carinate at base, the two posterior sepals distinctly connate; petals tubular- erect, blue-violet, acute at apex.
