Species Description - Plants moderate-sized to robust (up to 10 cm high), in ± dense, yellow-green to yellow-brown tufts, tomentose (especially on main stems), regularly to irregularly pinnate. Leaves wide-spreading or falcate, 3.5-4.5 mm long, ovate-lanceolate from an erect but not closely sheathing, plicate base, broadly-acuminate and abruptly narrowed below the apex; margins revolute from the base nearly to the tip, sometimes strongly revolute at the shoulders, serrulate from the tip nearly to the shoulders, the teeth single or paired; costa excurrent into a fine acumen or subpihform tip; upper cells rectangular, up to 40 µm long, 4-6 µm wide, papillose because of projecting ends; inner basal cells somewhat longer, up to 60 µm long; alar cells large, lax, and hyaline in 4-5 rows, the outer 1-2 rows hyaline and thin-walled. Setae arcuate, 6-7 mm long; capsules horizontal to pendulous, 2-4 mm long, subglobose, irregularly wrinkled to nearly smooth when dry; operculum plano-convex; exostome teeth inserted below the mouth, lanceolate, 2-3-forked in the upper 1/3, reddish, faintly papillose below, more coarsely papillose above, 400 µm long; endostome segments nearly as long as the exostome, keeled, yellowish to hyaline, bifid to below the middle, coarsely papillose above. Spores reniform, areolate, 20-24 µm.

With fertile material in hand, B. subarcuata is easily distinguished from other local species by smooth to irregularly rugulose capsules. Sterile plants may resemble B. chrysea or some forms of B. tomentosa or 5. inclinata. However, the laxly erect leaf base, relatively broad acumen abmptly narrowed at the tip, and well-developed alar regions provide a combination of characters that identify most collections.
