Species Description - Plants scarcely lustrous, densely tufted, medium-sized, usually up to 2 cm high. Stems simple or branched by short subfloral innovations. Bulbous, yellowish, axillary gemmae often present or filamentous and axillary appendages occasional. Leaves rather distant except in the comal part, ± twisted or wrinkled and tending to be appressed when dry, erect-spreading when moist, ovate- or oblong-lanceolate, slenderly acuminate, ± decurrent, distinctly bordered by thickerwalled, much more elongate cells in 1-3 rows; margins entire or slightly crenulate above, slightly reflexed below; costa strong, long-excurrent; cells broadly oblong-hexagonal, thinwalled, usually 40-60 x 16-20 µm, short-rectangular in the basal part ofthe leaf. Dioicous. Setae relatively thick, usually 2.5-3.8 cm long; capsules globose or short-oblong with a short, thick neck abruptly narrowed before a short taper to the seta; operculum short-conic or hemispheric, hardly apiculate; peristome teeth joined at base, subulate-linear, orange at base, yellowish above; endostome yellow, segments relatively well developed, narrowly perforate, irregular in length, ciha rudimentary or absent. Spores 15-19 µm, roughened.

This moss can be confused with some species of Pohlia when sterile and may, in fact, be a link between Pohlia and Brachymenium. Judging from the description, Brachymenium columbicum (De Not.) Broth, may be synonymous with this species; it has priority, but no type has been located.

On moist to wet soil or decayed logs; Campeche and Tabasco.—Mexico; Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama; Cuba and Puerto Rico; Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Brazil.
