    Species Description - Plants minute, scarcely lustrous, usually in dense tufts. Stems simple or branched by subfloral innovations, usually several mm long. Bulbous, yellow-green, axillary gemmae occasional. Leaves crowded except below, ± wrinkled and appressed to the stem when dry, erect-spreading when moist, ovate to oblong-ovate, acuminate; margins entire, occasionally slightly reflexed below; costa strong, short- to relatively long-excurrent, usually with a smooth tip; cells oblong-rhomboidal or rhomboid-hexagonal in the middle of the lamina, short-rectangular or subquadrate at the basal margins. Dioicous. Perichaetial and perigonial leaves not much differentiated. Setae erect, slender, usually about 1 cm long; capsules suberect, pyriform with a short neck; operculum small, usually hemispheric, without an apiculus; peristome teeth normal; endostome consisting of a basal membrane and rudimentary segments and cilia. Spores 8-10 µm, nearly smooth.

    On moist to relatively dry soil among rocks or in crevices in sunny to semi-shady places; Baja California, Chihuahua, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacan, Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, Veracruz.—Mexico; Guatemala to northern and middle South America; Hawaii, Japan, southern and southeastern Asia, and Africa.
