Species Description - Plants robust (3-6 cm high), scarcely lustrous, usually densely tufted. Stems simple or branched by stout, subfloral innovations. Leaves usually ± distantly and equally spaced except for a comal aggregation, variously wrinkled and erect to erect-spreading when dry, more spreading and often decurved when moist, up to 12 mm long, ± obovate, acuminate, abruptly narrowed and decurrent at base, distinctly bordered by 3-4 rows of hyaline, narrowly rhomboidal to sublinear, thicker-walled cells with pitted walls; margins serrulate to serrate in the upper half or more with teeth often paired; costa nearly percurrent; upper cells rhomboid-hexagonal, up to 90-120 x 35-40 µm, with relatively thick, pitted walls. Dioicous. Perigonium well-differentiated. Sporophytes 1-2 from a single perichaetium; setae usually 2-3 c -m long, ± flexuose-curved; capsules nutant to subpendulous, up to 6 x 12 mm, ± arched, subclavate, with a relatively long, slender neck; operculum large, low-conic, scarcely apiculate; endostome with a high basal membrane, broad, rather narrowly perforate segments, and nodulose cilia that are irregular in length. Spores 15-19 µm, nearly smooth.

Distinctive characters are provided by long, equally spaced leaves with a decurrent base, double marginal teeth, and border consisting of narrowly rhomboidal or sublinear cells with pitted walls.

Distribution
Usually on moist soil ± rich in humus, rarely on boulders or decayed wood; Distrito Federal, Durango, Mexico, Michoacan, Morelos, Oaxaca, Puebla, Yucatan.—Mexico; Guatemala and Costa Rica; Venezuela, Ecuador, and Bolivia.
