Species Description - Dwarf, single- or multi-stemmed plants of understory, the stems 1 or 2, slender, 20-100 cm X 4-6 mm, the internodes 2-4.5 cm long. Leaves 5-15, spirally arranged along upper part of stem; petiole (including sheath) 6-15 cm long, erect; blade oblanceolate, always simple, bifurcate at apex, 17-27 X 5-9 cm, horizontally spreading. Inflorescences spicate, 2— 6 per plant, interfoliar (1 per leaf axil), erect; peduncle 1-2 cm long, the prophyll and peduncular bract membranous, short, barely visible; spadix simple, villose, 2-4 cm long. Fruits ovoid, pointed at apex, 8-10 X 5-6 mm, dark blue at maturity.
Distribution and Ecology - Fl, fr (year round); everywhere on well-drained soils, but never abundant.
