    Species Description - Small, single- or multi-stemmed plants of understory, with 1-3 stems 0.3-2 m X 4-10 mm, the internodes 1-6 cm long. Leaves 5-15, spirally arranged along upper part of stem; sheath 5-15 cm long; petiole 8-35 cm long; blade pinnatisect, bifid at apex, 25-55 x 8-30 cm, the rachis 18-40 cm long; pinnae usually 3 per side, opposite, 2-6 cm in width, sigmoid, long-acuminate. Inflorescences 1-3 per plant, infrafoliar, usually 1-branched, at first erect, then ± horizontally spreading; peduncle 6-15 cm long, brown-lepidote, the prophyll and peduncular bract small, swollen, brownish-lepidote, 2.5-5 cm long, deciduous at anthesis; rachis 1-8 cm long, bearing 3 - 6(10) rachillae, these twisted in bud, then ± flexuous, 8-17 cm long, green at anthesis, dark red when bearing fruits. Fruits globose, ±6 mm diam., black at maturity.

    Distribution and Ecology - Fl, fr (year round); mostly on lowest part of slopes and along streams on wet clay, but never on inundated soils, collected only once in the vicinity of Saul along the Route de Belizon.
